The kora is an instrument of the griots who hold an important and respected role in Mande society as keepers of knowledge. The Mande is a family of ethnic groups that are widely spread across western Africa, in Mali, Senegal, Gambia, to name a few. They are proud of their history and their heritage which goes back to the 12th century.
The kora is one of those instruments that has a strong link to tradition and history, but it has also been able to make a bridge with contemporary life and culture.
It takes very simple materials to make a kora: basically, these are wood, hide and the ever-present African calabash.
