This is a question that intrigues most of us and one that we are constantly asking one another as students, right? What level are you? Who do you play with? Who do you study with?
At Wooden Roots when we organise events we often feel that we have to make categories for playing levels for example beginner, improver, intermediate and so on but what ends up happening is that people either think that they are a lower or higher level and still end up taking the incorrect class for where they are at in their journey which can either help or hinder your studies.
We have decided to simplify things with our workshops and make them ALL LEVELS. This means you should have a basic understanding of playing djembe which you can gain from taking our monthly FREE INTRO class or maybe you have taken classes elsewhere with other teachers in your area.
Our workshops aim to provide teachers that can teach to every level and that nobody is left behind and equally you are challenged at every level.
We recently had a visit from Yahael Camara-Onono of the Balimaya Project and we think that he explains playing levels beautifully in this video.
Yahs will be teaching an ALL LEVELS workshops at Wooden Roots on September 6th 2025. It will be a small intimate all day workshop where you can spend the day with him and really hone in on your Djembe & Dunun skills.
We look forward to seeing you!
