THIS ONE-OFF WORKSHOP will offer a wonderful opportunity to try Senegalese Sabar Drumming with master drummer Modou Diouf who will be on tour in the UK from Gambia for a limited time.

In collaboration with African Linx, we bring you this amazing annual workshop with Modou Diouf, born in Senegal and now living in Gambia. Whether you’re a complete beginner or want to further develop your Sabar drumming, this will be a marvellous opportunity.

Want to take your West African drumming studies further? If yes, then you are welcome to book onto this thrilling Sabar Drumming workshop that we are offering at our studio on Bentwaters Parks, Rendlesham, Woodbridge.

Sabar drums originate in Senegal, West Africa and are played using a stick in one hand and the palm of the other. The rhythms are very exciting and form the basis of the famous Mbalax style of drumming in Senegal. Modou is a very experienced and patient teacher and his workshops are great fun.

Attend on either SATURDAY (£45) or SUNDAY (£45) or come along on BOTH DAYS (£85) and receive a £5 discount.

Take a 2 hour taster session on SATURDAY MORNING (£25) ages 8+ admitted accompanied with a parent

ALL DAY SATURDAY is MIXED LEVELS

ALL DAY SUNDAY will step up from Saturday so no complete beginners in this workshop please unless you attended Saturday (you will thank us for it later).

A limited number of Sabar drums are available for use please let us know if you require a drum when booking. Tea/coffee will be provided - bring a packed lunch if you’re attending all day.

Ready to take your West African drumming skills to the next level? Come along to Wooden Roots and join us for this one off workshop aimed at ALL LEVELS from beginners to experienced players. Engage in this AUTHENTIC tuition which is taught Modou Diouf who is top in his field and who is excited to share this wonderful and traditional culture with you.

This workshop runs over 5 hours each day with a one hour lunch break on August 24th & 25th 11am - 4pm and is in our large modern studio on Bentwaters in Rendlesham where you will have access to a large kitchen for teas & coffees but please bring a packed lunch or go to Harvey’s coffee shop across the street from us.

If you are not ready to commit to a whole day of Sabar drumming we are offering a TASTER SESSION on Saturday morning 11am-1pm and this is also offered to young learners 8+ with a parent accompanying them (the parent may drop off if the y/l is a student with us already)

Your teacher is Modou Diouf. Modou Diouf was born into a long lineage of Griot Musicians of Northern Senegal. Now widely found in The Gambia, this music was once reserved for Senegalese Royalty. Today a Sabar ensemble can be heard at many social occasions, such as weddings, naming ceremonies, other rites of passage and even wrestling matches (one of the most popular sports in Senegal).
